Choosing the right language test is a critical step in your journey to study in Germany. Depending on whether your programme is taught in English or German, you will need to prove your proficiency through standardized exams.

Why Language Proficiency Matters

German universities require proof that you can follow academic lectures, participate in discussions, and complete written assignments in the language of instruction.

English Language Exams

Most English-taught programmes in Germany accept IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT. Some also accept the Duolingo English Test or Cambridge Certificates (C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency).

German Language Exams

For German-taught programmes, the most common exams are TestDaF and DSH. Alternatively, a Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule is often accepted.
